In an effort to bolster the flagging Microsoft Live service offering and to compete with existing Image services from Google and Yahoo, Microsoft will is BETA testing photo sharing and free web based folder file sharing.

Beta testers are being given 500 megabytes of online storage. Though they can share files with anyone they wish, people who are invited to use a shared folder have to sign up for a Windows Live ID for authentication, said Brian Hall, general manager of the Windows Live business group.

"This is the second generation" of Windows Live, said Hall.

If they could just improve Live search they might be on the right track, as it is if they did not have the install base of windows users pointing traffic to Live search, they would be nowhere.
