There are many things to consider when choosing a name, and much of this is a matter of personal preference, so here are some things to consider when choosing your website address.
Try and make the name it as short as possible, the shorter the better.
Important: Your domain name should have at least one of your chosen search keywords in it, this is very important for SEO, because the search engines takes the view that the URL name of the website is one of the most important indicators of content and therefore relevance.
For example if someone searched for DVDs and the index has 2 websites with similar DVD content volume and quality, if one website was called digitalstore.com and the other is called dvd.com, well the dvd.com will place higher when searching for the word DVD.
For SEO only names, it is acceptable to have longer names, as long as your chosen search keywords are in the longer domain name. Obviously this is not so good if marketing to people, people don’t like typing long names, and don’t remember them, so this is something you will have to decide for yourself
Check the competition when choosing your domain name, don’t pick a name that’s too similar to a competitor for example don’t buy dvd-store.org if dvd-store.com is taken, they will always be older then your website and as a result higher ranked, also you will be driving traffic to their site through natural search and people have a preference for typing .com not .org
Are dotcom domains better then dotnet or dotorg? or any of the others?, the answer is .com is better for branding and marketing to humans, but the search engines don’t give any preference to a website with different extensions.The main reason you will see dot com website place higher then equivalent dot org etc websites is because the dot com website are typically much older, and have been building their rank and hence relevance for much longer then the newer domains. For example .mobi was only created in 2006.
Mobile device considerations, if your thinking of offering your website to mobile users, then your choice of domain name is important, absolutely the shorter the domain name the better, also it recommended to use a top level domain name.
There is a big problem with all of this and it is simply that all the good names you might have short listed will most likely been chosen already.
This will force you to choose ever longer and more exotic domain names, for example, dvdstore.com is taken so you might have to try something like dvd-store or Ilovedvdstore.com, if don’t correctly this fine for SEO but not as desirable for marketing to human beings
Tip: Even if a desired domain name is take, open it in a browser and do a whois to see if it is it actually in use, you will be surprised at how many domains are cyber squatted and not actually in use. In this case you can use the alternative .org or whatever domain name without losing traffic to the dot com.

TIP: This is a loaded question and not an easy one to answer, but here are some quick quidelines.
There are many things to consider, firstly you should make sure you have at least a paragraph of actual text on your homepage, talking about your website, if you have a flash heavy website that could be a problem, because the search spaiders ignore flash, theyre looking for text.
Your search keywords should be on the home page at least once also, but dont over do it.
Like people need friends, websites need link backs, Build your link backs over time, quality relevant link backs, do NOT use SEO link back sites which add you to 1 billion link back sites, they are being flagged and dropped by the search engines, and can actually have a negative impact on your rank.
Your rank = how close to the home page of Google your search is placed, page 3 page 2 etc, the closer you get to page 1 the more people will visit your website.
Dont forget to submit your websites to the search engine crawlers, Google and Yahoo have great submit tools the rest like MSN just finds your site naturally, see links section
Lastly be patient install Google analytics, that will give you good reporting demographic information for your website, it takes months to improve your ranking, expect to wait a couple of weeks even to rank 1. (rank starts from 1 and goes to 10 being most relevant)

Category : Traffic Building , add a commentThis is one of the single most important decisions your going to make for your website, you must decide what keywords (words) best describe your website, remember this is SEO which basically means your marketing to the search crawlers not to people so while being overly verbose and descriptive may go down well with people, for SEO you start by choosing 2 or 3 keywords that you think best describe your website.
Ask yourself this question, if you were searching for your website product of content what words would you use when searching in Google, then ask your friends, very soon you should have a short list of 3 or so keywords.
So you now know what keywords your woud use to find your website and you know what words your friends would use, what about everyone else?, you need to find out.
How to check popular search keywords?
Yahoo overture has a great little tool called Yahoo keyword assistant, located here; http://inventory.uk.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
So in our example we search for DVDs, we can see that more people searched for DVD rentals then DVDs, this means you might try focusing more on renting online rather then selling and emphasize general DVDs rather then Chan’s because less then 100 people searched specifically for these. Regardless its clear how useful this information is.
From this moment forward these words control how you market your website, if your keywords are “Jacky Chan DVDsâ€, then your aim in life is to increase your search ranking when someone types in Jacky Chan or Jacky chan DVDs or Chinese DVD etc, any new products or new content must be relevant to these keywords
It sounds obvious to say “your website content should only be relevant to the central idea or product sect of the website or business†but you would be amazed how difficult it is to discipline yourself to keep your website content focused.
